Why I Felt Compelled to Create 'Humble Marketing'

Marketing Sucks.

This is what my Minnesota Nice upbringing taught me. Advertising and Marketing was all about whatever you needed to do to get attention and the sale. My demure speak-when-spoken-to upbringing abhorred the thought of putting myself out there and criticized it as being too self-centered. I was taught to pointedly ignore the sleazy used-car salesmen and never trust anything they told me. Be respectful, quiet, prudent. The nail that sticks up gets pounded down.

Lo and behold - one day I found myself working for a marketing firm, helping clients on a daily basis, and teaching a marketing class at my Alma Mater. To do that, I had to reconcile some of my beliefs and un-learn a few falsehoods about marketing.

But the biggest thing that helped me learn how to sell fearlessly was realizing that marketing wasn't about me, it was about helping others.

As I thought more about this, I realized there was this inescapable gaping hole in my knowledge.

My insatiable curiosity intended to fill it, so I dug deeper. There’s a problem with the way we’re using marketing and advertising to communicate. It more often causes mis-communications rather than connections. I wanted to figure out why.

Based on hundreds of interviews and months of research, I revealed some very big issues :

  1. Consumers are demanding value as they shift their attention to new media platforms (such as phones and social media).
  2. We're feeling a disconnect between what we’ve learned and what actually works in today's marketing and advertising world.
  3. Learning new marketing and advertising strategies that work is hard, lonely and frustrating.

But there was one more issue, deeper than the rest.

I’ve seen companies and individuals that get it. They’ve made great transitions to the new marketing and advertising realm - one where the customer has greater control and two-way communication is now the norm.

But I’ve also seen marketers that are still broadcasting messages. That don’t have the knowledge, skills or time to test every technique out there to find the ones that work today. In this competitive (and fast-growing*) job market, they’re feeling increasing isolated and frustrated.

I believe there will be winners and losers in this new world of marketing and advertising. The losers will continue to stick their heads in the sand. They'll ignore the fundamental behavioral changes that our phones are making on our society and our lives. They’ll mire themselves in self-help and tactics meant to improve their own performance. They'll continue to soldier on, alone.

The winners will recognize that just because we’ve gone digital doesn’t mean we’ve gone robotic. That there’s still a human on the other side of the screen. Communicating with them is different than before, but it still comes down to fundamentals of human connection. And creating that human connection for others begins only after you’ve made those types of connections yourself.

If you believe in the latter, I want you to join us in our movement. To take marketing back from dog-eat-dog competition and sleazy used-car salespeople**. To promote a grander view of marketing than just a necessary evil.

We believe the right combination of passion, honesty and integrity can rocket businesses past the lower level of want in consumer’s eyes to need in consumers’ hearts. We want everyone to dig past the surface desire to sell and into the core of what marketing’s function is; to believe that marketing has the power to change the world.
